Health and Safety at Work
Who do we inspect?
Health and safety enforcement is split between the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities, dependant upon the
type of work activity involved. In the main, local authorities are
responsible for health and safety enforcement in the following
types of work activity:
- Offices;
- Retail and wholesale shops, including cash and
carry, market stalls, shoe repairers, coin operated launderettes,
mobile shops and garden centres;
- Tyre and exhaust centres;
- Restaurants, takeaway food shops, mobile snack
bars and catering services;
- Hotels etc, including pubs, cafes, wine bars,
guest houses, hostels, holiday homes, caravan and camping sites and
residential homes;

- Wholesale or retail warehouses;
- Leisure and entertainment facilities, including
night clubs, discos, bingo halls, amusement arcades, circuses,
social clubs, sports facilities, health clubs, gyms, swimming
pools, riding schools, pleasure boat hire, golf clubs, motor racing
circuits, race courses, theatres and art galleries;
- Therapeutic and beauty services;
- Exhibitions;
- Religious activities;
- Undertakers;
- Animal care.
