Shipping Brow Improvements
This page contains details of the improvements
undertaken to the Shipping Brow area of
Maryport.
The works were carried out as part of the
Maryport Townscape Heritage Initiative, which is being funded by
the Heritage Lottery Fund, North West Development Agency and
Allerdale Borough Council.
The improvements used high-quality, natural
materials and have been designed to showcase Shipping Brow’s
breathtaking views over the Solway Firth and its rich architectural
heritage. Shipping Brow is home to some of the oldest and most
prominent buildings within Maryport, and these
improvements ran parallel to the MTHI programme of
renovation for derelict properties across the town centre. As
part of the wider MTHI Scheme the former Carlton cinema has been
renovated as has the Golden Lion Hotel, which reopened in
March 2010.
Improvements included the introduction of
terraced areas on each side of Shipping Brow, which incorporated
raised areas. An innovative lighting scheme has been incorporated
into the design of the terraces, helping to soften paved
areas. Existing pavements either side were also widened
and resurfaced with high-quality, natural materials such as
granite.
Other improvements outlined include:
- Improved pedestrian signage
- Hand railing
Works started in January 2009 and ran
alongside the on-going improvements to key buildings across
Maryport Town Centre.
