Cockermouth Masterplan and Market Place
The Market Place area in Cockermouth, once the
commercial centre of the town, is to be at the heart of local
regeneration plans. These plans, drawn up by Cockermouth
Partnership following 6 months of local consultation and planning,
aim to create an attractive, people-friendly mixed-use commercial
area that will attract locals and tourists and add value to
Cockermouth’s appeal. The forward-thinking Partnership is
supported by Allerdale Borough Council and aims to facilitate
socio-economic benefits, applying local innovation, creativity and
collaboration to overcome the big challenges currently facing their
community and many others.

Marketplace regenerated
After intensive public consultation, a decision was reached
on which option would be taken forward to regenerate the
Cockermouth Market Place. The choice was informed
by a fierce, but constructive debate regarding the merits of
five different options. During that time, nearly 500
people took time to write to the Cockermouth Partnership or to
visit the website, stating preferences and also contributing
valuable and well informed suggestions.
A meeting on 30th of July 2007, the Cockermouth Steering Group
voted to proceed with Option D which retains two way traffic in the
Market Place, but with a much reduced road way and a massive
increase of the public space in the Market Place.
The scheme contained traffic calming on the approaches
and better surfaces and space for pedestrians with no overall loss
of parking spaces. The option to open a new road through Old Hall
Went onto Kirkgate was rejected.
Works began in late 2007 and finished in September
2008.
In September 2009 the scheme was highly commended in the
Northwest Tourism Awards, Public Space Award.
