The Vision of Allerdale Borough Council

Allerdale Borough Council's vision is of an area in which all communities share in the prosperity currently enjoyed in parts of the Borough. The goal of the council is that by 2011 Allerdale will work with regional and local partners to ensure the number of people in work, as measured by the Economic Activity Rate, continues to exceed the North West rate. Economic regeneration initiatives implemented by both the private and public sectors, as well as the local community, will play a key role in helping the Council achieve this vision. The task of reducing unemployment must be addressed by a holistic approach; one that incorporates improvements to the physical environment, creates an image of Allerdale conducive to inward investment, and successfully links local people to job opportunities.

Unemployment Trends 1998-2008

Unemployment in Allerdale has been falling steadily since 1998, bringing the Borough average below those of the north-west region and the country as a whole, whereas previously the rate was higher. In March 1998 the unemployment claimant rate in Allerdale was 5.4%, a figure 1.2% higher than the north-west average and 1.5% higher than the national average. Since this time, the unemployment level within Allerdale has fallen steadily, dropping to 1.9% of Allerdale's resident working age population claiming unemployment benefit in March 2008. This figure was lower than both the claimant count for the North-West, and the UK as a whole at this time.
