bandoned vehicles – 93% of reports of abandoned vehicles were investigated within 24 hours in 2009-10
Benefits – in 2009-10 we received over 5,500 benefits claims forms, dealt with 17,000 changes of circumstance and visited over 600 elderly or disabled claimantsChartermark
Charter Mark – our Environmental Health team retained its Charter Mark Award for the tenth year running
Developments - our planning service determined over 800 planning applications
Eye-sore buildings – our work targeting dilapidated buildings gained national recognition
Football pitches – we maintain 236.4 hectares of land, that is the equivalent of 470 football pitches
Gaining savings - £3.5 million savings made through the Council’s ‘Transformation’ programmeWigton Market Hall and Community Centre handover
Housing – we were one of just 36 councils in the country to receive Government funding to help design and plan new housing developments
Investing in communities – we handed over the keys to Wigton Market Hall and Wigton Community Centre to North Allerdale Development Trust, under a scheme to help the community-based charity become self-sustaining and generate its own income
Joined-up working – sharing the ICT service with Carlisle City Council made £120,000 savings
Keeping the streets clean – we sweep 23,400 miles of streets each year – almost the distance around the world!
Licensing – our Licensing team dealt with 1,500 licensing applications
Maryport Townscape Heritage Initiative – 2009-10 saw a total investment of over £720,000, creating 33 jobs and improving 1,500 square metres of floor spaceEnviroment Health
November floods – our staff worked 24/7 in reception centres, on the emergency telephone hotline, rehoming those affected, inspecting over 700 buildings, preventing the spread of disease, distributing 8,000 sandbags, cleaning the streets of mud, silt and flood debris and working with partners to get Allerdale back open for business
Orienteering – with the help of grants from Allerdale Borough Council, two orienteering sisters from Cockermouth found their way into the finals of a championship event
Poop – we’re tacking dog fouling by giving out 15,000 poop scoop bags per month
Quality – our three leisure facilities received high scores in the QUEST accreditation scheme
Recycling – last year we recycled and composted 19,400 tonnes of rubbish – the same weight as 4,200 elephants!
Swimming – More than 38,609 free swims were enjoyed by the young and the young at heart at Council-owned swimming pools in 2009-10
Train station – we resolved legal and planning issues within 24 hours to build the temporary Workington North train station on Council landVulcan Park Green Flag Award
Up-to-the-minute information – our website was rated ‘excellent’ for the second year running by the Society of IT Management
Vulcan Park – Workington's Vulcan Park won its first Green Flag in 2009-10
Warning – Our building site safety scheme highlighted the perils of playing on building sites to local schoolchildren
X-ray eyes – not needed to access our services; we make them available in different formats to suit our customers
Young people – Local youngsters tackled climate change issues as part of the 11 Million Takeover Day
