28/07/2010 - Workington flies the flag for award-winning park

Vulcan Park in Workington has retained its Green Flag Award from the charity Keep Britain Tidy for a second year in recognition of its environmental improvements.

The Green Flag was presented to members of the partnership involved in the success, including Allerdale Borough Council, ISS Waterers Landscape, Workington in Bloom and the Vulcan Park Bowling Club, and it will be proudly displayed in the park.

The flag was raised today (28 July) by the Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Robert Hardon, who celebrated the win with members of the park keeping team and Workington in Bloom.

Councillor Sam Standage, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member with responsibility for Green Spaces, said: “We were delighted when Vulcan Park first won the prestigious Green Flag status last year but to be awarded it for the second year running is a tremendous achievement.

“The Council works in partnership with others to implement improved grounds maintenance programmes for parks, open spaces and nature sites. It just goes to show that a partnership done right can deliver something of value for the whole community. Everyone involved in helping Vulcan Park to retain its Green Flag award should be very proud of themselves and I would like to thank them all for their hard work.”

The Green Flag Awards are presented by Keep Britain Tidy to recognise and reward the best parks in the country. Vulcan Park stood out after impressing the judges with its excellent facilities including well managed gardens, signs and amenities, such as the café and children’s play area.
The park also proves very popular with children and young people taking part in Allerdale Borough Council’s holiday schemes, which are held there to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Park Watch initiative was also highlighted, which is designed to reduce anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in West Cumbrian parks, as was the role of the Council’s environmental wardens in tackling littering and dog fouling.

The Green Flag judges chatted with users of the park’s café and members of the Vulcan Park Bowling Club, as well as with Margaret Jones, the Mayor of Workington and Chair of Workington in Bloom.
