29/07/2010 - Summer activities in Workington town centre

Young people can enjoy a wide range of fun activities in Workington this summer.

Every Friday evening POWW (Positive Opportunities for the Weekend in the West) will be either in the town centre or at Impact Housing’s Nook Street Centre – with circus skills, street dance, music, arts and crafts, quizzes and loads more for 13 to 18-year-olds.

The first fun evening kicks off on Friday 30 July at 6.30pm with the chance to learn circus skills in the former Shoe Zone shop next to Akitts.

POWW in Workington (which is part of the wider POWW West Cumbria Partnership) has been organised by Impact Housing, in partnership with Allerdale Borough Council and Costa Coffee to provide young people with positive things to do over the summer holiday period.

For more information about the rest of the summer POWW sessions taking place each Friday evening throughout the holidays, contact Hayley McTear on 01900 842993 or Anne Cartner on 01946 839923.

The Hub in Workington’s town centre will also play host to The Midday Sun – a piece of street theatre from Storytree celebrating the natural world and its cycles. Performances of the environmentally-themed costume drama will take place at 12noon on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 August and Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August.

The events are part of Allerdale Borough Council’s empty shops initiative and are designed to encourage even more visitors to Workington town centre.

In addition, the jeweller Rachel Gaw will be Workington’s artist in residence throughout August. Rachel makes contemporary jewellery in resin and aluminium, which is sold in stores in Manchester, Surrey and Cornwall, and will be showcased in the town centre during August.

She will also be holding rubber and resin jewellery making workshops for people aged 11 and over in the former Shoe Zone shop between 10am and 4pm on:

• Saturday 7 August
• Sunday 8 August
• Saturday 21 August
• Sunday 22 August
• Saturday 4 September
• Sunday 5 September

Places on the jewellery making workshops are limited but may be booked by calling Rachel on 07917 842205 or emailing: rach1809@aol.com
