29/05/2008 - 3D Sound takes off in Workington

Allerdale Borough Council is pleased to announce that the Hub, the world’s first permanent outdoor 3D Soundfield, is being launched on Friday 6 June 2008, 12-2pm, in Workington town centre.

The Hub is the world’s first permanent outdoor 3D soundfield and performance space; the area has a canopy overhead, lighting and a state of the art 3D sound system. The Hub's canopy, designed by BASE Structures in Bristol, is suspended from the surrounding buildings.

The 3D soundscapes being launched, composed by Illustrious Company and SoundWave, provide an immersive sound experience, including elements of recordings made in and around Workington. The Hub's 3D sound system can be configured to broadcast any live or recorded sound. Allerdale Borough Council will be working in partnership with SoundWave, as well as local performers and organisations, to programme and create new work to be performed in the space in the future.

The Hub is for everyone to use. The design was selected to meet the demands of initial public consultation, to provide shelter as well as a new public performance and meeting space.

About the artists:
BASE Structures Ltd is a leading tensile fabric structures contractor, who provides a complete service to the fabric structures industry from foundations, design, manufacturing to installation and maintenance. BASE specialise in structures for exterior and interior purposes, advertising media such as engineered banners, building wraps, net structures and have a specialist rope access department. Examples of BASE structures include world-famous locations such as the Lords Cricket Ground, Eden Project, Gatwick Airport and London's Portobello Market.

Martyn Ware of Illustrious Company, pioneers in electronic music will, introduce a 3D soundscape produced from sounds collected by Martyn during a visit to the area in October 2006. The soundscape has been specially commissioned for the Hub as part of the Workington town centre public realm programme. Illustrious have created 3D sound compositions for various UK venues. In 2006 they created a work for sound oasis, a major 3D sound project created for the Palacio de las Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

Dave Camlin of SoundWave, a local social enterprise company specialising in music development will introduce 3D soundscapes produced by local groups. Recently SoundWave led by musician Mark Newport has been developing expertise in the cutting-edge technology creating 3D music soundscapes working with local musicians and performers.

The Hub is the final and most dramatic in a series of public realm projects in Workington town centre funded by £2.74m of investment from the North West Regional Development Agency and designed to improve public spaces in Workington. The project has been managed by Allerdale Borough Council.
