Allerdale Borough Council supports national campaign marking centenary of First World War

29 July 2014

Allerdale Borough Council will be showing its support next month for a UK-wide campaign marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The ‘Lights Out’ campaign encourages people across the country to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on Monday 4th August, leaving on one single light or candle to represent a shared moment of reflection of 100 years since the start of the First World War.

The Council’s HQ at Allerdale House in Workington will have a solitary light shining in the window of the top floor of the building. Hundreds of local councils, public buildings and monuments throughout the country, including the British Library, Imperial War Museums, and Tower Bridge are also taking part.

Councillor Len Davies, Mayor of Allerdale, said: “When we heard about the ‘Lights Out’ campaign, we felt it was important to do our bit to support it. This is a time for us all to take a moment and think about those people that gave their lives for our country a hundred years ago and we hope that many more Allerdale residents and businesses will also get behind the campaign.”

In addition, Royal British Legion volunteers will be organising candlelit gatherings throughout the UK. The Workington branch is currently planning to have an event at The Hub in Workington’s town centre where it will be holding poetry readings and dedications.

Lesley Jackson, Branch Secretary of the Workington British Legion, said: “The charity is encouraging as many people as possible to think about what it would have been like to live 100 years ago with no lights, just candlelight. Whether people decide to light a candle at home or join us from 10pm at The Hub in Workington, we hope they will use this time to reflect and remember those service men and women who gave their lives in the war to end all wars.”
