10p swims throughout the Summer

16 July 2015

Allerdale Borough Council is repeating its hugely successful 10p swim scheme throughout the school Summer holidays.

From this Saturday, 18 July, children aged 16 and under will be able to take advantage of the offer at the council-owned swimming pools in Workington, Cockermouth and Keswick. The Wigton Pool and Netherhall Pool in Maryport are also taking part in the scheme.

The 10p swims start this Saturday 18 July during public sessions at the Cockermouth, Workington, Wigton and Maryport swimming pools. Encouraging young people to be more active, and providing a safe swimming environment, are key priorities for Allerdale Borough Council and it has joined forces with its sport and leisure partner, Greenwich Leisure Ltd, to run the scheme. The initiative is also being supported thanks to a £5,000 contribution from Cumbria County Council.

The entry offer will run until Friday 4 September, and sessions will vary between the pools taking part so please check with your local pool for timetable details or visit http://www.better.org.uk/leisure-centre/allerdale as well as Wigton Pool and Maryport's Netherhall Pool. More details are also available.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s deputy leader with the portfolio for Economic Development, said: “This is now the third year in which this 10p swim scheme has been run. We are re-launching it not only to help young people to be active and to also stay healthy and fit, but to ensure all children are able to make the most of Summer and the leisure facilities Allerdale has to offer.”

Cllr Gerald Humes, Vice-Chair of Cumbria County Council’s Local Committee for Allerdale, added: “In difficult financial times, we are supporting this scheme to help young people to be active, and able to make the most of summer. It is important to the County Council that all children have the same opportunities and we are delighted we can help to make that possible.”

Normal pool adult to child supervision ratios apply at the swim sessions and entry may be denied if the maximum bather numbers are reached. For opening times and other details, please contact the pools direct.

The pool numbers are: Cockermouth 01900 823596, Workington 01900 61771, Keswick 017687 72760, Wigton 016973 42412 and Netherhall 01900 812161.
