Leisure Centre in Workington hosts activities for local older people

Wednesday 28 September 2016

Residents of Allerdale and West Cumbria who are aged over 50 can take part in a series of activities for just £2 this weekend. ‘Fit For Your Age’ is being held to mark Silver Sunday, Grandparents Day and Older People’s Day.

A number of gentle swimming and sport sessions will be on offer at the new leisure centre in Workington from 10am on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 October to encourage older local residents to be more active. Gym inductions will also be taking place throughout the weekend.

The sessions are being held by Greenwich Leisure Ltd and is part of Allerdale Borough Council’s initiative to improve health and wellbeing in the area, and to encourage more people to use sporting facilities in Allerdale.

Mark Fryer, Executive Member of the Council with responsibility for sports development, said: “The Council is proud to help mark such a significant weekend for the older people in the area. We recognise there is a need to get older residents across West Cumbria more active, and this is a great way to encourage them to keep fit while promoting the fantastic facilities that are available for all generations – you’re never too old for a swim! We hope to see plenty of people coming along to enjoy the range of activities on offer.”

Garry Schubert, General Manager at Workington Leisure Centre, added: “We’ve got a great programme of events this weekend that we hope will encourage anyone over 50 to come down and have a look around our fantastic new centre. They can try out activities such as badminton, squash, table tennis and swimming for a single charge of just £2. We would love to see new people join our already established weekly sessions for over 50s such, as ABC Aerobics and swimming, and we’ll have all that information ready this weekend for anyone who would like to get involved.”

Regular physical activity has a great deal of benefits to older people. It helps to keep the heart healthy and lose weight, while strengthening muscles, helping with balance and co-ordination and improving overall physical and mental health.
