Allerdale House turns blue for World Diabetes Day

11 November 2015

Allerdale House in Workington is to Go Blue for Diabetes this weekend as part of an international awareness-raising campaign.

The building, which is the headquarters of Allerdale Borough Council, will be lit with blue lights throughout the night to mark World Diabetes Day on Saturday 14 November.

The floodlighting will illuminate the side of the building which faces the Cloffocks and the town centre. The lights will be lit from dusk on Saturday.

Councillor Carni Mccarron-Holmes, Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Diabetes is a growing issue for our health services and is one of the major causes of premature death worldwide. We know that lifestyle changes like changing your diet or taking more exercise can dramatically reduce the chance of contracting Type 2 diabetes and anything that raises awareness of this disease can only be a good thing.

“I hope people will question why Allerdale House is illuminated with bright blue lights, and then think a little more about this disease. If we can prevent any further cases of diabetes just by this simple act on Saturday, that will be the perfect result.”

There are 30,716 people in Cumbria who have been diagnosed with diabetes – but it is estimated that there are 7,146 people living with the disease in the county who have not been diagnosed. Of those Cumbrians who know they have the disease, 27,644 have Type 2 diabetes, and 3,072 have Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas have been destroyed – often the reason why is not known. Type 2 diabetes usually appears in middle-aged or older people, although more frequently it is being diagnosed in younger overweight people. The risk of developing Type 2 diabetes can be reduced by changes in lifestyle.
