Allerdale Sports Awards

The talent, dedication of athletes, sports teams, volunteers and coaches were celebrated on Friday night at the annual Allerdale Sports Awards. 90 guests including guest speaker GB Long Jumper Chris Tomlinson congratulated winners at the glittering ceremony held at the Wave Centre, Maryport. Organised by Allerdale Borough Council, the awards recognise the outstanding talents, commitments, successes and sporting excellence of teams and individuals throughout Allerdale who are involved in sport. 

The coveted Sports Person of the year was awarded to England and Super League netballer Helen Housby for her winning performance and season at club Manchester Thunder and selection for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. She is currently representing England in their Autumn Tour of Australia and NZ and will return to play for her University and Club next month.

17 year old swimmer Luke Greenbank collected the Junior Sports Person Award for his fantastic performances this year. He helped Great Britain to gold in 4x100m relay and picked up a bronze in the 200m backstroke at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing and in April became the first ever 16 year old in Britain to break the 2 minute barrier with a record of 1.59.87 seconds. 

Rising Star Awards were given to sprinter Ben Lyall-Smith, triathlete Rachael Vatter and hockey player Zoe Irving. Shaun Cavanagh was awarded Volunteer of the Year for his commitment to Workington Park Run and Coach of the Year went to Cockermouth Badminton Club’s Barry Wilkinson.

Adam Pointon received the Young Leader of the Year trophy and Samantha Wilson received the Performance Award for a person with a disability for the second time for her superb regional and national performances in wheelchair basketball and swimming. A Special Award was given to Cockermouth RUFC to recognise their efforts and commitment to the club and Cockermouth Swimming Club were named Team of the Year for an outstanding 12 months.

Alex Bell, Development Officer for Allerdale, said:  “the awards are a fantastic opportunity to showcase the talent we have in our area and pay tribute to those who dedicate so much of their time to competing, coaching and volunteering in sport”.

Each winner received a trophy and a specially engraved slate monolith handcrafted by Honister Slate Mine. The winners will go through to the Cumbria Sports Awards held on 29/11 at the Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel, Windermere.
