It’s time to nominate your local sporting heroes

19 August 2014

The Allerdale Sport Awards 2014 are back for the third successive year and members of the public are now being encouraged to nominate their own local sporting heroes.

Allerdale Borough Council is coordinating the awards, which will be held at the Wave Centre in Maryport on Friday 17th October. Chris Tomlinson, the Great Britain and England Long Jumper and former British Record Holder, will be the guest speaker. Fresh out of the Commonwealth Games, Chris will provide an insight into his career in elite sport and competition.

The Allerdale Sport Awards 2014 will pay tribute to the outstanding talents, commitment and successes of teams and individuals throughout the borough who are involved in sport. As well as celebrating sporting talent, the awards recognise the hard work of coaches and volunteers, which could be someone taking a young athlete to the top of the national rankings or the dedication and support of family and club members who wash kit and drive every week to those games across the County.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Growth, said: “After a weekend of fantastic success for British Athletics at the European Championships in Berlin and the wealth of recent home-grown sporting talent showcased at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, these awards come at a great time. We’re not only celebrating the efforts of some of our local athletes, but hopefully inspiring and motivating more people to get involved in sports – whether that’s by physically taking part or working tirelessly behind the scenes.”

The award categories include:

·        Sports Personality of the Year

·        Junior Sports Personality of the Year

·        Coach of the Year

·        Volunteer of the Year

·        Young Sports Leader

·        Sports Performance by a person with a disability of the Year

·        Special Award

·        Team of the Year

·        Rising Stars

·        Most Innovative Club/ Sports Initiative (NEW for 2014)

Members of the public have until midnight on Sunday 14th September to nominate their local sporting heroes. To nominate someone for an award, simply visit the Active Cumbria website at

Individual category winners will also be put forward to the County Sports Awards, which are due to take place in November.
