Flying the flag for Cumbrian servicemen and women on Armed Forces Day

15 June 2016

Two ceremonies are to take place in Workington on Monday 20 June to mark Armed Forces Day.

At 10.30am, flags will be raised on buildings and landmarks around the country – including Allerdale House. Councillor Celia Tibble, the Mayor of Allerdale, will be joined by civic dignitaries, armed forces representatives and members of the public for a short flag-raising ceremony.

Then, to recognise Allerdale Borough Council’s signing of the Armed Forces Covenant, this will be followed by the unveiling of a plaque by Colonel Chris Owen, Regimental Secretary of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, and the council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes.

The official Armed Forces Day flag is raised to mark a week of national celebrations in support of the men and women of the armed forces community including serving personnel and their families, veterans and the cadet forces.

This year the ceremony will be followed by the unveiling of the plaque at Allerdale House to endorse Allerdale Borough Council’s support for the Armed Forces Covenant. The Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between a civilian community and its local armed forces community.

The Covenant’s purpose is to encourage support for members of the armed forces community working and residing in Allerdale. This includes personnel who are still serving, as well as ex-service men and women, and their families. For the armed forces community, the Covenant also encourages the integration of service life into civilian life and encourages members of the armed forces to help their local community.

On Monday 20 June, there will be a short procession from the top of the Allerdale House car park down to the flag pole at Allerdale House, where the ceremony will take place. The Armed Forces Day Flag will then be raised by the Mayor at 10.30am. Those wishing to join the procession are asked to gather at the top of the car park by 10.15am in readiness for the ceremony. The unveiling of the plaque is expected to take place at 10.35am. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
