Woman pleads guilty to £8,052 benefit fraud

22 January 2015

A Workington woman has pleaded guilty after being accused of claiming £8,052 of benefits which she was not entitled to.

Rebecca Helen Irving, aged 34, of Newlands Gardens, has been sentenced to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work, ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £60.

West Cumbria Magistrates Court heard how Miss Irving had declared some earnings she received for working as a carer, but failed to tell Allerdale Borough Council that her earnings had increased, and that she also had another job. As a result, she was overpaid £7512.93 in housing benefit and £221.50 in council tax benefit. She had also received a discount of £317.63 on her council tax which she was not entitled to.

When interviewed under caution, Miss Irving admitted that she knew a change in income would affect her benefits and that she must report any changes in her circumstances.
