No Christmas nights out for benefit cheat

2 December 2014

A Workington man has been sentenced to a two month night-time curfew after admitting benefit fraud.

Brian Smith, aged 54, of Pearl Road, Salterbeck, has also been ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £60.

Mr Smith was in receipt of an occupational pension from British Steel, but had failed to inform Allerdale Borough Council which resulted in a £6165 overpayment of housing and council tax benefits.

Mr Smith claimed he had been told that his occupational pension, which he was awarded in 2010, would not affect his benefits. However, he did admit that he knew that the more money a person had coming in, the less benefit they would be entitled to.

Mr Smith’s curfew will remain in place from 7pm to 7am, until 21 January 2015.
