Mum overpaid £8500 in benefits

2 December 2014

A mother who didn’t declare an increase in earnings from three different employers has received a Christmas curfew after pleading guilty to benefit fraud.

Emma Louise Wilson, aged 34, of Challoner Street, Cockermouth, will be subject to the restrictions until 18 March and required to stay indoors between 8pm and 6am. She was also ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £60.

Ms Wilson admitted three counts of benefit fraud at West Cumbria Magistrates Court which resulted in an overpayment of £8562.64.

The offences dated back to 2010 after the coffee shop where she worked in Cockermouth was flooded. She had claimed income support until finding work as a housekeeper at the Derwent Lodge Hotel in Embleton.

It was following a routine review by Allerdale Borough Council’s benefits team in March 2014 that Ms Wilson told the council she also had been employed by the Shepherd’s Hotel in Cockermouth, and went on to admit working for three different employers since May 2010, increasing her hours worked, and her income.

Ms Wilson said she had reported the changes to HMRC for tax credit purposes, and assumed the information would be passed the Council. However, she admitted that she had not checked her benefit award letters where she would have seen that the information was incorrect.
