Benefit fraud prosecution

2 July 2014

Allerdale Borough Council has prosecuted a woman from Aspatria for claiming £4860 in Housing & Council Tax Benefit to which she was not entitled.

On 12 June 2014, West Cumbria Magistrates heard how Elaine Thompson of 29 Harriston, Aspatria had claimed housing & council tax benefits since at least 2000.

Information was received that her son was in full time work. As a result of failing to declare her true circumstances Elaine Thompson was overpaid Housing Benefit amounting to £4275.40 and Council Tax Benefit of £219.60 over a period between 2012 and 2013. She also received a discount on her Council Tax bill of £365.21 for the period April 2013 and February 2014.

At court, Ms Thompson pleaded guilty to claiming Housing and Council Tax Benefit to which she was not entitled. Ms Thompson was sentenced to a community order of 40 hours unpaid work. She must also pay a victim surcharge of £60 and a contribution to the Council’s costs in the sum of £85. These will be deducted from her ongoing benefit.
