Wigton woman guilty of £11,000 benefit fraud

22 January 2015

A Wigton woman has pleaded guilty to benefit fraud after failing to declare all her earnings.

Sharron Simpson, aged 46, of Greenacres, Wigton, claimed £11,227.86 more than she was legally entitled to.

West Cumbria Magistrates Court heard how Miss Simpson declared that she was working 22.5 hours each week as a support worker at a Cumbria County Council care home. But when they asked to check her wage slips, benefits officers at Allerdale Borough Council discovered that she worked overtime on numerous occasions, but failed to declare this in her benefits claim.

As a result, she was overpaid £9674.12 in housing benefit and £753.09 in council tax benefit, and also received a discount on her council tax of £800.65.

Magistrates sentenced Miss Simpson to a 12 month community order with two conditions – she is subject to a curfew between 10pm and 6am for three months, and must also complete 120 hours of community work. She was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £60.
