The Big Allerdale Switch is back to help you save money on your energy bills

2 December 2014

People across Cumbria are being encouraged to join the second phase of a popular initiative, which collectively saved Allerdale residents more than £53,000 on their annual gas and electricity bills earlier this year.

Allerdale Borough Council ran the first ‘Big Allerdale Switch’ last December and householders who signed up are now seeing average savings of £200 on their utility bills.

The Big Allerdale Switch is a ‘collective switching’ scheme where people group together to purchase their gas and electricity and save money. The initiative, which will be launched today (Tuesday 2nd December), is being run by Allerdale Borough Council but is open to anyone in the country to apply to.

Councillor Carni McCarron Holmes, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “This is a win-win situation as it costs nothing at all to register your interest to switch providers and you could end up saving hundreds of pounds in the long run. It’s really simple - the more people who sign up, the more the potential savings can be.”

“At a time when household costs are rising, people are struggling to make ends meet and falling into the risk of fuel poverty; we need to step up and do what we can to help our residents to cut their bills. Reducing poverty is a key initiative in the Council’s Plan and we will continue to promote, champion and co-ordinate schemes like this to ensure people are getting the best possible value from their energy supplies.”

The Big Allerdale Switch is completely free to join, really simple to do, and at no point in the process are residents under any obligation to actually switch energy providers if they decide to change their minds.

Allerdale Borough Council is running the switching initiative as part of the Big Community Switch, a scheme involving a number of local authorities throughout Great Britain. The Big Community Switch is operated by i-Choosr, an independent company with experience in collective switching schemes. It works by setting up a reverse auction and inviting energy suppliers to offer their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals.

Last year, Allerdale Borough Council attracted the second highest number of registrants out of approximately 50 local authorities that took part in the scheme. Due to the success of the initial scheme, the Council is choosing to run it for a second year with a view to save even more people more money on their annual utility bills.

The Big Allerdale Switch launches on Tuesday 2nd December 2014. To sign up to the scheme, visit, call 01900 702888, or visit Allerdale House or any of the Council’s district offices. You will need a copy of an energy bill to hand as information will be required from it. The next auction will take place in February 2015.
