Give a warm welcome to the Big Allerdale Switch now Winter’s here

19 January 2016

As snow arrives and temperatures plummet, residents are being encouraged to join the Big Allerdale Switch - an initiative which has collectively saved residents more than £33,500 on their annual gas and electricity bills this year.

Allerdale Borough Council ran the second ‘Big Allerdale Switch’ in December 2014 and householders who signed up are now seeing average savings of £262 on their utility bills. Due to the continued success of the scheme, the Council is choosing to run it for a third year with a view to saving people even more money.

The Big Allerdale Switch is a ‘collective switching’ scheme where people group together to purchase their gas and electricity. The initiative is being run by Allerdale Borough Council but anyone in the country can apply to the scheme, not just those living in the borough.

It is completely free to join, really simple to do, and residents can change their mind at any time in the process.

Allerdale Borough Council is running the switching initiative as part of the Big Community Switch, a scheme involving a number of local authorities throughout Britain. The Big Community Switch is operated by i-Choosr, an independent company with experience in collective switching schemes. It works by setting up a reverse auction and inviting energy suppliers to offer their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals.

Councillor Carni McCarron Holmes, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “No-one should have to think twice about turning on their heating and we hope those who sign up to the Allerdale Big Switch will really feel the financial benefits.

“It costs nothing at all to register to switch and it’s really simple - the more people who sign up, the more the potential savings may be.”

Councillor Barbara Cannon, Executive Member for Corporate Resources, added: “Tackling poverty and inequality is a key part of the Council’s Plan and we work hard on schemes like this to ensure people can get the very best deals. We need to step up and do what we can to help our residents to cut their fuel bills and reduce the fuel poverty risk for the people of Allerdale.”

Registration for the Big Allerdale Switch ends on Monday 1 February 2016. To sign up to the scheme, visit http://www.allerdale.gov.uk/warmhomes, call 01900 702888, or visit Allerdale House or any of the Council’s district offices. You will need a copy of an energy bill to hand as information will be required from it. The next auction will take place on Tuesday 2 February 2016.
