The Big Allerdale Switch is back

27 April 2016

Allerdale Borough Council is again running its popular energy supplier switching scheme, giving people the chance to save money on their energy bills.

Allerdale Borough Council has previously run the ‘Big Allerdale Switch’ in the winter months. However, they are rolling out further chances to join the scheme so that householders whose energy contracts were not up for renewal in the winter months are able to take advantage of the savings which may be on offer. At the last auction, held in February this year, householders saved an average of £272 on their annual energy costs.

The Big Allerdale Switch is a ‘collective switching’ scheme where people group together to purchase their gas and electricity and save money. The initiative is being run by Allerdale Borough Council in association with iChoosr - but is open to anyone in the country and can be used by those on dual-fuel, separate supplier contracts or on pre-payment meters.

Anyone wishing to join the scheme should go online to www.allerdale.gov.uk/warmhomes by 16 May 2016 and follow the links. Full details of past energy consumption and current supplier is needed to sign up. You can also ring 01900 702 888 or go to one of the Council's area offices.

Graeme Wilson, Allerdale Borough Council’s Head of Housing and Health, said: “This is a win-win situation as it costs nothing at all to register your interest to switch providers and you could end up saving hundreds of pounds in the long run. It’s really simple - the more people who sign up, the more the potential savings can be.”

“I’m also really pleased that we can offer the scheme at a different time of the year as people can be tied into contracts which meant they couldn’t switch when we did the scheme before. Hopefully those householders will be able to make use of the scheme this time round.”

The Big Allerdale Switch is completely free to join, really simple to do, and at no point in the process are residents under any obligation to actually switch energy providers if they decide to change their minds.

Allerdale Borough Council is running the switching initiative as part of the Big Community Switch, a scheme involving a number of local authorities throughout Great Britain. The Big Community Switch is operated by iChoosr, an independent company with experience in collective switching schemes. It works by setting up a reverse auction and inviting energy suppliers to offer their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals.

  1. For more information contact 01900 702526, corp.comms@allerdale.gov.uk
  2. Householders have until 16 May 2016 to join the scheme. At the end of the registration period there is a reverse auction where the energy suppliers submit their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals. This will be held on 17 May 2016. Householders will then be given the chance to sign up to the new deal or not. In February 2016, nearly 50% of those who registered switched supplier.
  3. There are a further two Big Allerdale Switch schemes planned to start on 2 August 2016 and 6 December 2016.
