Over £53,000 savings from Big Allerdale Switch

3 June 2014

Almost a third of Allerdale households who registered their details for the Big Allerdale Switch and went on to switch energy providers have seen average savings of £200 on future utility bills.

A total of 269 people across the borough made the decision to switch in a scheme which has collectively saved Allerdale residents more than £53,000 on their annual gas and electricity costs.

The Big Allerdale Switch, which was run by Allerdale Borough Council from December to February, was a ‘collective switching’ scheme, allowing people to group together to purchase their gas and electricity and save money.

Across the UK, the overall switching rate was just 24 per cent whereas in Allerdale, this figure rose to 31 per cent – almost a third of people who originally registered. A similar auction, which ran nationwide across the UK before Christmas, saw just 11 per cent of people switch.

Sarah Potts, 34, from Seaton switched from EON to OVO Energy and has subsequently saved £200 off her annual gas and electricity bill. Sarah is a CIS Administrator at Lakes College and is also one of the College’s Green Champions who encourages employees to look for new ways to look after the environment while saving money at the same time. She said: “I was really surprised at how simple it was to switch. I expected it to be a long, drawn out process and not really worth the hassle for the end saving. However, I’m now glad that I took part in this scheme and will certainly be recommending switching to colleagues, friends and family in future.”

Councillor Carni McCarron Holmes, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “People power has definitely been a big success for Allerdale residents with some seeing huge individual savings of more than £500 off their gas and electricity bills. Interestingly, out of those who switched, for the vast majority it was their first time of doing so, showing that people are getting more financially savvy and seeing the benefits as a result.

“Cutting bills is a key initiative in the Council’s Reducing Poverty Strategy and this is just a small step forward in achieving our goals. Should we run another similar scheme in the future, we hope that more people will come out to support it and save themselves money at the same time.”

The Big Allerdale Switch was part of the Big Community Switch, a scheme involving a number of local authorities throughout Great Britain. The Big Community Switch was run by iChoosr, an independent company which has experience in collective switching schemes. iChoosr sets up a reverse auction and invites energy suppliers to offer their cheapest dual fuel and electricity only deals. The Big Allerdale Switch auction was held in February 2014.
