Changes to car parking charges in Allerdale

Thursday 28 April 2016

Changes to parking charges in car parks owned by Allerdale Borough Council are to be implemented next week.

The new tariffs will be introduced across our car parks on Wednesday 4 May 2016 with machines updated throughout the day. Users should pay the amount as shown on the tariff sheet on the machine.

The changes to the fees were agreed by a meeting of the Council’s Executive on March 16 2016. The aim of the changes is to ensure that all the Council’s car parks operate at high percentage occupancy but are not so full that residents and visitors are prevented from finding a parking space. There was extensive public consultation before the new tariffs were agreed.

Some of the changes include:

  • A cut to just 50p for those parking for up to 30 minutes in Keswick to make it cheaper for people to ‘pop and shop’ and help encourage trade in local businesses
  • Two hours’ free parking in Mill Street car park in Maryport
  • The introduction of single-town permits which range from 27p per day to 82p a day, without the need to buy a £1 ticket as before
  • The ability to pay in advance for early morning parking, allowing those staying in town centre hotels and guest houses to have a more leisurely start to their day
  • An overnight charge of £1 from 7pm to 7am

There has been no change to the price of permits for low-paid workers. This remains at the current rate of £35 for three months.

Anyone with questions about the changes, and how they may affect their permits or local car parks, can call 01900 702869 during office hours and speak to the parking team.
