Changes to planning meeting procedures

Following a review, and feedback from residents and stakeholders, Allerdale Borough Council is making some changes to the procedures of its Development Panel, the committee which considers planning matters.

The main changes, which are effective immediately, are that the number of objectors that are able to speak at the Development Panel meetings is increased to four and that objectors and applicants will be able to provide supporting information to the Development Panel in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.

Councillor Peter Bales, Chair of the Development Panel, said: “In response to our consultation we received representations from both members of the Panel and from other interested parties. Some of the suggestions we couldn’t act upon, such as evening meetings as it would mean us finishing the meeting at 10pm or later and site visits wouldn’t be able to take place in the dark winter evenings. However, where we could we have made changes.

“The changes should result in a more transparent and democratic process and allow more people to become involved in the process of determining planning applications.”

The previous guide to procedures, entitled ‘Public Participation at Development Panel’, was published in June 2011. Further details of the planning process can be found at www.allerdale.gov.uk/planningapplications
