Come and get involved in the Cockermouth Town Centre Clean

9 March 2016

Residents, businesses and community groups are being urged to join forces for the 2016 Cockermouth Town Centre Clean.

Organised by Allerdale Borough Council’s Town Centre Manager Joe Broomfield, in partnership with Cockermouth & District Chamber of Trade, Cockermouth Town Council, Riversmeet and Cockermouth Civic Trust, the event will take place on Wednesday 23 March from 10am until 2pm. Churches Together are also involved, as they are running the Bridge Café in Wakefield Road car park, which will be the headquarters for the clean-up.

This is the third year the Town Centre Clean will take place and, for 2016, will focus on the Memorial Gardens and Gote Road areas which were hit by the floods in December last year.

Councillor Michael Heaslip, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member with responsibility for locality services, said: “The Council’s Streetscene teams, along with our contractors ISS and FCC, do a brilliant job but having more willing volunteers is always welcome so that we can specifically tackle more areas of the town.

“There is still quite a lot of debris from the floods on the Gote side of the river so that is where we will focus our efforts this time. The Chamber of Trade specifically asked us to hold this year’s town centre clean before the Easter holidays to make sure that it looks as good as possible when there are plenty of visitors in town.

“Anyone who can spare a little time to help with the Clean would be very welcome. You don’t have to come for the whole session – just a little assistance would be great. Through the combined efforts of the Council and those volunteering the town centre clean should result in big improvements in Memorial Gardens and the surrounding area.

“We started the Town Centre Clean initiative in Cockermouth three years ago and have since expanded it to other towns in Allerdale. It’s proved really popular and we hope people really notice the difference.”

The meeting point for the Cockermouth Spring Clean will be the Bridge Café in Wakefield Road car park. Cleaning materials and free refreshments will be provided, volunteers just need to come suitably dressed. To get involved, email, call 01900 702568 or just turn up on the day.
