Free parking on offer to visitors and shoppers in Cockermouth

3 March 2014

Allerdale Borough Council is to provide free car parking in Cockermouth to help businesses during the Main Street roadworks.

It was announced last week that the entire road is to be closed by Cumbria County Council while the vital works take place. The original plan had been for phased closures of one carriageway to minimise disruption for local people, visitors and businesses. However, the initial stage of the works in High Sand Lane has taken longer than anticipated due to unexpected complications involving the network of utility services and other obstructions under the road.

Allerdale Borough Council’s aim is to compensate for the loss of one-hour disc zones on Main Street and Station Street, and give drivers easy access to the town centre. So, from Monday 3 March, drivers will be able to park for free for two hours on both the Wakefield Road and Sullart Street car parks. Visitors staying less than two hours should display a parking disc or their time of arrival. Those staying longer should follow the instructions on the pay and display machines which will give them their first two hours free.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “As soon as we heard that Cockermouth’s main arterial road was to close we knew we had to come to the rescue of traders and help keep Cockermouth open for business. I hope this free parking will make life easier for shoppers and visitors, and keep them supporting our amazing array of local businesses.

“We know the roadworks and drain repairs have to be done because of the damage caused underground by the 2009 floods but it is hugely disappointing that Main Street has to be totally closed. Some businesses were only just back on their feet following the floods and now they’re hit with this. But the people of Cockermouth proved they were made of stern stuff in 2009. They have been through worse and I’m sure they will pull together while this disruption takes place.

“Thanks to the Council’s parking services team and our town centre manager for sorting this out so quickly.”
