Consultation to decide on use of outside space at new Leisure Centre in Workington

27 August 2014

A public consultation is under way to get the local community’s views on what they would like to see outside the new Leisure Centre in Workington.

Allerdale Borough Council is asking people who live and work across the area to think about what special features or types of activities they would like to see as part of the exterior of the new building at Brow Top, close to the town centre in Workington.

The Council have the opportunity to apply for some external funding support to develop a public amenity space in front of the new leisure centre plaza. There is potential to get up to £75,000 to create an area that can be enjoyed and used by the community, whether it’s somewhere to continue to get out and be active, or somewhere to take a picnic and have a relaxing time with family and friends.

Some initial examples for consideration include; climbable letters, outdoor table tennis, and fitness training programmes. Other suggestions include the provision of short running and walking routes, as well as displaying Uppies & Downies information boards - given their historic links with the site.

However, people are also being encouraged to share any of their own, first hand experiences of fun, interactive outdoor activities that the whole community could benefit from and use free of charge.

Councillor Michael Heaslip, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Locality Services, said: “We have already asked for thoughts and suggestions of what type of sporting facilities people want to see inside the new leisure centre and now we want to make sure that the external space is also a welcoming place to spend time.

“As part of the leisure centre development, we will be carrying out a lot of landscaping work to make the whole area more attractive to visitors, but we want to hear from as many people as possible about what else we can provide in the space.”

The Leisure Centre Outside Space consultation runs until Sunday 14th September 2014. To complete the survey, visit:
