Council warns of hoax callers

Allerdale Borough Council is urging householders to ensure they don’t give out personal information to strangers.

The warning follows a recent report regarding the legitimacy of an unknown man offering to help residents out with their benefits in Workington. A woman reported to the Council that he persuaded a vulnerable relative to hand over her bank details on the door step.

Councillor Philip Tibble, Executive member with responsibility for Customer and Regulatory Services said: “If you are in doubt as to whether they are legitimate then we would ask you to check if they have any identification, if so contact the company to see if they have members of staff working in the area.

For more information, contact Allerdale Borough Council’s Revenues and Benefits team on 01900 702702

In a separate incident Trading Standards and Police wish to alert Cumbrian residents to a potential mobile phone scam that may be operating in the County.

The incidents involve the delivery of top of the range mobile phones which have not been ordered by the householder.  Within a short time the householder will receive a call purporting to be from the telephone provider advising that there has been a mistake and the phones will be collected shortly.

You are advised not to hand over the phones to anyone and call Cumbria Police on 101 quoting CP-20130807-0144.

If you need any help or advice in relation to any scams please contact Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506.
