Designs for new gym in Workington unveiled for the first time

7th September 2015

Details of the state-of-the-art gym in the new swimming pool and leisure centre in Workington have been unveiled.

Boasting the latest technology and apparatus, the gym will play a key part in the facilities available to users of the new centre when it opens next Spring. Whilst owned by Allerdale Borough Council, it will be operated by GLL. They have been working with equipment experts TechnoGym to design something which will provide the right facilities for existing members, as well as attract potential new users for years to come.

Part of the research included the use of heatmap technology to work out exactly when the current equipment is used to find out what is popular. This information has been central to designing the new gym.

Included in the apparatus available are:

  • 30 spinning bikes with 28 in their own studio
  • A selection of exercise bikes and running machines
  • Upper body trainers
  • Two step machines
  • Four rowing machines
  • Nine crosstrainers of different types
  • An Omnia8 group training apparatus which can be used by up to eight people at the same time
  • A variety of free weights and benches

The 3D images and renderings will be on display at Workington Leisure Centre at Moorclose for users to view and comment from Wednesday 9 September. Representatives from TechnoGym and GLL will be available in the afternoon and evening on that day and on Thursday 10 September to talk people through the plans. There will also be a TechnoGym treadmill and bike available for people to use.

Michael Heaslip, Executive Member for Locality and Commercial Services, said: “This gym, and the other sporting facilities on offer, will put Workington on the map and I can’t wait to see it open. I’d like to thank the work of all involved in the drawing up of what will be a fabulous gym which will be for people from throughout the area to use. It will also go a long way to meet our council priority of improving the health and wellbeing of residents.”

Martin Horne, GLL’s Regional Development Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be able to showcase the work done so far on the new gym for the new leisure centre in Workington. Our partners at TechnoGym have worked with the space available to give us the best possible outcomes and get the maximum amount we can from the facility. Customers will see more equipment available for them to use and the research done on user habits and patterns means that the balance of equipment reflects what current users actually use when they visit us – it looks fantastic on paper and will be even better when it arrives”.

For those who can’t make it to the Moorclose Leisure Centre, the images are also available on our blog which follows the building of the new leisure centre, https://viewfromthebrow.wordpress.com/ . The web page has been named partly in recognition of the number of people who are following the building of the new centre from the brow overlooking the site. The images will also be on GLL’s and the Council’s website.
