Last chance to win £5,000 in Direct Debit competition

Tuesday 20 September 2016

Residents of Allerdale still have the chance to win £5,000 by registering to pay their council tax by Direct Debit before 5pm on Friday 30 September.

Allerdale Borough Council has signed up to the national campaign, launched by Bacs Payment Schemes Limited (Bacs), the not-for-profit organisation behind Direct Debit in the UK.

And in addition, all those already signed up will be automatically entered into the prize draw, so nobody misses out.

The £5,000 draw is being arranged by Bacs in partnership with the Council. All entries will go into a national draw organised by Bacs, with the winner announced in October.

Anyone wishing to sign up to Direct Debit can do so on the Council’s website at, or call 0303 123 1702. Residents can also sign up at one of the Council’s area offices.

The Council is also making it more convenient for residents to pay by Direct Debit by doubling the number of payment dates. Bills can now be paid on the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd of the month.

Councillor Konrad Hansen, Executive Member with responsibility for Regulatory Services, said: “Time is running out for the people of Allerdale to be in with a chance of winning £5,000. This is a fantastic scheme, and paying by Direct Debit really does offer a great deal of benefits. Not only will residents have the opportunity to win the equivalent of nearly three year’s council tax payments, but they will also be safe in the knowledge that their bill will be paid on time, on their chosen date. In turn, the Council can save money on collecting payments and chasing debts, which can then be better spent on other services to the public.”

Dawneth Perry, Bacs’ local authority specialist, commented: “We are pleased to support all of the organisations taking part in this year’s national campaign; the first time we’ve brought together local authorities from across the country.

“We’ve run a London-specific campaign since 2010 and the results over this period have shown just how effective these initiatives can be. In fact, over the last six years our council tax campaigns have delivered in the region of £2.5m in savings for those participating and we’re now hoping that we can drive cost efficiencies for local authorities across the country.”
