Council prosecutes irresponsible dog owner

Wednesday 13 April 2016

A man from Workington has been prosecuted after failing to clean up after his dog.

Jeff Tasker, aged 42, of Burrow Walls, Northside, Workington, was fined £220, given a victim surcharge of £22 and told to pay a contribution of £100 to the Council’s costs.

He had failed to pay a £80 fixed penalty notice issued by one of the Council’s Streetscene officers so the case was referred to the magistrates court, leaving Mr Tasker with a total bill of £342.

The court heard how, on Friday 4 September 2015, Mr Tasker’s dog was spotted off its lead close to the Northside roundabout in Workington. A Council Streetscene officer was driving past when they saw the dog fouling in the shrubbery twice in quick succession.

Assuming the dog was a stray, they stopped to try and catch it. The dog ran away towards the local primary school where it was caught by a young boy and given to two men. The Council officer approached the trio and one of the men, Mr Tasker, said he was the dog’s owner.

The Streetscene officer asked him to pick up the mess his dog had left behind but he said he didn’t have any bags to do so, at which point he was issued with a fixed penalty notice. Despite receiving a reminder letter, Mr Tasker failed to pay the penalty so the Council took the case to prosecution.

Charles Holmes, Allerdale Borough Council’s Head of Community Services, said: “Dog fouling is always one of the biggest complaints we receive as a council. Our residents, quite rightly, hate it - it is a danger to children’s health and makes the area look awful.

“We will take the strongest action we can against those we catch in the act. There is no excuse not to be a responsible owner and we won’t tolerate the behaviour of those who refuse to clean up after their dogs.”
