Grants available to contribute to empty homes in Allerdale

Monday 16 October 2017

Allerdale Borough Council has grants available to help owners of empty homes get their properties back into use. The Council is encouraging people to apply for a grant as part of National Empty Homes Week.

Up to £10,000 is available for owners of homes that have been empty for more than 12 months. The grant covers up to 75% of the price of the works and homeowners are expected to contribute towards the remaining costs.

Eligible works can include:

  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy measures to reduce fuel poverty and carbon emissions
  • Works to bring the property up to the Decent Homes Standard
  • Fire safety measures
  • Home security measures

Empty Homes Week runs from Monday 16 until Sunday 22 October 2017 to raise awareness of the issue of empty properties and is supported by local authorities, housing providers and community-led organisations who are tackling the issue of empty homes.

Councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes, Executive Member with responsibility of Housing, said “These grants are often a great help to property owners who are struggling to maintain an empty building and find a suitable use for it. We want all properties to be in use, so I would urge anyone with an empty property to contact our housing team who will be able to provide as much support and advice as needed.”

Applicants will be expected to fund 25% of the works. For more information on eligibility of Empty Homes Grants, or to apply, contact the Housing Services team on 0303 123 1702 or email
