Have you received your voting guide? – You can’t miss it!

1 June 2016

With the EU referendum fast approaching, Allerdale Borough Council is urging residents who are not on the electoral register, to register to vote by the 7 June deadline, and to check the Electoral Commission’s voting guide for advice on how to take part.

The referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union will take place on Thursday 23 June 2016.

The guide, which was delivered to every UK household over the past week, contains important information for voters on how to register to vote, how to cast your vote, and arguments from the lead campaigners for the ‘Remain’ and ‘Leave’ side.

Andrew Seekings, Electoral Registration Officer for Allerdale Borough Council, said:

“Now that voters in Allerdale have received the voting guide from the Electoral Commission, we hope people feel confident about taking part in the referendum on 23 June.  Anyone that hasn’t received a copy can view it online at http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/

“Don’t forget that you won’t be able to have a say if you haven’t registered to vote by the 7 June deadline, so I’d encourage everyone who isn’t on the electoral register already to get online now and register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote . If you have received a poll card then you know you are registered and will be able to vote on June 23”.

Voters that are already registered to vote are being reminded that they do not need to register again for the EU Referendum on 23 June.

If voters require a postal vote they have until 5pm on June 8 to apply. Forms are available on the Council’s website at http://www.allerdale.gov.uk/  or by contacting the Council on 01900 702 550. Postal votes for new applications will be sent to voters around June 13.

Emma Hartley, Head of Campaigns and Corporate Communications at the Electoral Commission said: “The referendum on 23 June is an opportunity for people to have their say on one of the key political issues of our time.

“Voters have told us that they want accessible and impartial information so that they feel they can make an informed decision at the ballot box.  We have sent our voting guide to every household across the UK so that as many people as possible feel confident about casting their vote on 23 June”.

The guide is also available online and has been produced in a range of different languages and accessible formats.

Any voters who require any additional information are advised to go to http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/ or to telephone the Electoral Commission helpline on 0800 3 280 280. For enquiries about joining the electoral register contact Allerdale Borough Council’s electoral services department on 01900 702 550 or electoralservices@allerdale.gov.uk .
