Festive events across Allerdale

Monday, 9 November 2015

With the end of the year approaching, there’s a host of events happening across Allerdale which will keep everyone entertained.

The calendar is packed full of festive treats in the town centres, with the aim of attracting people from across the county to the local celebrations.

November is a big month for getting into the Christmas spirit as the traditional Christmas lights are switched on across the borough.

The Christmas lights switch-on events and Winter festivals take place as follows:

Friday 13 November – Keswick – with community entertainment and the annual BBC Children in Need Appeal North East & Cumbria Show

Saturday 21 November – Maryport

Sunday 22 November – Cockermouth - with live performances, fun fair and Santa’s grotto

Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 November – Workington Winter Wonderland

Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 November – Wigton Christmas Festival

Sunday 6 December – Aspatria

In Keswick, they have a Live Advent Calendar event running from Tuesday 1 to Thursday 24 December with a festive window trail. Different live performances will take place in the town centre and a festive window will be lit in different buildings every day of advent. This is a joint project between Allerdale Borough Council and Keswick Tourism Association involving many local groups and businesses.

On Friday 13 November the annual BBC Children in Need Appeal North East and Cumbria Show is planned to be broadcast live from Keswick. Pudsey will visit Keswick on the big night together with BBC Radio Cumbria and BBC One North East and Cumbria for the switch on of the town’s Christmas Lights.

Keswick Victorian Fayre also takes place on Sunday 6 December, with decorated charity stalls, a fun fair and entertainment.

Silloth Light Switch on will be held on Saturday 28th November, on The Green from 4pm to 6.30pm.  There will be a fairground and stalls and Eric Stanwix will be providing the entertainment.

The Cockermouth by Candlelight festival follows on Friday 11 December offering late night shopping and a lantern parade. It is followed by the Taste Cumbria Christmas Festival hosted in Cockermouth on Saturday 12 December and Sunday 13 December.
Councillor Mark Fryer, the Council’s Executive Member for Economic Growth, said: “The Christmas Lights across Allerdale are always a big highlight of the year, with great entertainment and decorative displays. They’re a great opportunity to attract visitors and business to the local town centres, as well as offering entertainment and festive fun for local residents of all ages.”
