International rugby stars back in Workington

Thursday 3 November 2016

A day of celebrations is planned when international rugby returns to Workington on Friday 11 November.

Allerdale Borough Council is involved in organising activities right across the town to give a great day of activities for those visiting for the Scotland versus New Zealand Four Nations rugby league fixture.

Under The Hub, in the Washington Square shopping centre, there’ll be everything from bagpipe players to highland dancers, plus family fun including a rugby rodeo, face painting, food tastings, a climbing wall and a fitness survival game. The town will also host a market that day, giving visitors more reason to boost the local economy before they head to the match.

Many of the activities will take place from noon to 7pm, before the match kicks off at 8pm. They have been timed to start after a brief Remembrance Day service which is being held under The Hub at 11am.

This Four Nations fixture is another opportunity for rugby fans to see some of the world’s best players in action. When Workington hosted Rugby League World Cup games between Scotland, Tonga and Italy in 2013, more than 16,000 people came to the town to see the sporting action. While many of those people were West Cumbrian rugby fans, it was estimated that more than 3,000 additional visitors came from outside the area on match days, giving a great boost to the local economy.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member with responsibility for economic development, is also a board member at Workington Town rugby league club. He said: “When the Scottish team arrived in town for the Rugby League World Cup, the town was buzzing from the moment they arrived. It will be fantastic if we get that same level of excitement for the Four Nations’ match next week.

“The community involvement is brilliant too. We try really hard to give visitors and locals alike a great day out – on top of the opportunity to watch these international sports stars play – which is why we’ve worked hard to ensure there’s loads going on in town that day.”
