Game on, mate! Get into sport in Allerdale

Wednesday 4 November 2015

A new sporting initiative has been launched by Allerdale Borough Council in a bid to get more people into sport.

‘Game On, Mate!’ will see walking football and touch rugby sessions in Workington and Wigton as part of a Sport England-funded programme which aims to help people become more active.

These activities are designed for people who aren’t playing regular football or rugby – perhaps those who played at school or have retired from the club game and want to get back into it, though they’re equally good for those who have never played these versions of sports.

Individuals and groups are welcome and there will be some prizes/rewards/incentives for those who have been to all sessions.

·         Touch rugby - Ellis Sports Ground, Mossbay Road, Workington – from Saturday 7 November, 10.30am to 11.30am. Sessions running for six weeks, for male and female participants aged 18+, £1 per session.

·         Walking football - St Joseph’s School, Honister Drive, Workington – from Monday 9 November, 5pm to 6pm. Sessions for men aged 40+, £1 per session.

·         Walking football – Wigton Rugby Club, Lowmoor Road – from Thursday 12 November, 5pm to 6pm. Sessions for men aged 40+, £1 per session.

·         Five-a-side football - St Joseph’s School, Honister Drive, Workington – from Thursday 12 November, 5pm to 6pm. Sessions for men aged 18+, £1 per session.

Councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member for health, said: “Sport is good for the mind as well as the body, and these activities will focus on fun as much as learning new skills.

“We know people often don't have the time to dedicate a full weekend day to playing sports but still want to be involved, so these smaller, informal versions of the game are a great way to stay involved.”
