Try a triathlon? Then GO TRI!

23 May 2014

Registration is now open for a great new sporting experience taking place in West Cumbria.

The first GO TRI event in the county takes place on Saturday 30 August 2014. It’s a family-friendly triathlon which aims to help people discover the sport without the strenuous demands of a traditional triathlon race. This is the first of four GO TRI events which is being organised by Allerdale Borough Council and its sporting partner Carlisle Leisure Limited over the next 12 months.

Councillor Mark Fryer, the Council’s Executive member with responsibility for sports development, said: “This event is perfect for someone who is daunted by the thought of a traditional triathlon but who fancies giving the sport a try. Its aim is to be fun, but with shorter distances to cover, so you the sense of achievement of finishing the course, but without over doing it. You don’t even need fancy equipment – just a roadworthy bike – and even if you do the swim doggy paddle, it doesn’t matter. Your only target is to reach the end.

“We’re committed as a Council to giving everyone access to affordable sports and leisure facilities and we’re always looking for new ways to do that. As one example, if the new leisure centre in Workington is approved, it will be perfectly placed for triathletes in training. It would provide a great new pool, and running and cycling tracks on the doorstep.”

Organised by Triathlon England and supported by funding from Sport England, GO TRI is designed to fit with modern ways of living, where people can turn up, get a short burst of healthy activity and still find time to hit the shops, spend time with family, enjoy other activities, or just relax.

There are three GO TRI challenges taking place on Saturday 30 August, starting at Workington Leisure Centre at Moorclose:

  • Event one – 8-length swim, 6-mile bike ride and 1.5-mile run
  • Event two – 12-length swim, 8-mile bike ride and 2.5-mile run, which can be done as a TEAM TRI option, with three friends taking a discipline each, or a pair tagging each other
  • Junior event – 3-length swim, 800m bike, 600m run – for 11-16 year-olds, on the all-weather and grassed areas.

Entry to the main events costs £10 for Carlisle Leisure Limited  members and £12 for non-members. Junior entry costs £5 for CLL members and £6 for non-members.
