Need help applying for £5,000 flood resilience grants?

Wednesday, 6 April 2016

A national charity backed by Prince Charles is helping Allerdale residents recover from the floods.

The Business Emergency Resilience Group (BERG) has staff on hand at a new advice centre in Cockermouth to offer advice and assistance to residents and businesses about the £5,000 property resilience grants. Cockermouth was chosen as an easily accessible location - the centre is open to residents and businesses from anywhere in the county.

The new centre, located in the town’s Wakefield Road car park, is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm. A telephone hotline has also been set up to offer advice and guidance with the grant applications on 01900 512139.

More information is also available on Facebook www.facebook.com/floodresilienceadvice, via Twitter @fradvice, or by email: info@floodresilienceadvice.com

BERG will be able to give expert advice on how to apply for the grant and what measures will help protect their property in the event of another flood. They are also able to organise a survey and arrange for any installation work to be carried out. Any local building firm can join the BERG initiative to then bid for contracts.

The Prime Minister announced the resilience scheme in the wake of the floods which hit Cumbria in December. It is open to all households and business owners who were flooded in whole or part as a result of the heavy rainfall from Storm Desmond and Storm Eva between 3-24 December 2015.

All grants are meant to pay for any measures over and above that already provided by the property owner’s insurance. It provides up to £5,000, of which £500 can go towards a property survey. Allerdale Borough Council is administering the scheme on behalf of the government.

Whilst BERG can provide expert advice to property owners and help them with the process from beginning to end, there is no obligation to use their services. Applicants are still able to arrange their own surveys and building work direct.
