Experience award-winning opera in Workington

10 October 2013

Opera is coming to Workington this Autumn as part of the celebrations for the Rugby League World Cup 2013.

Allerdale Borough Council, working with Rosehill on the Road, an initiative by Whitehaven’s Rosehill Theatre, will host a performance of La Bohème  at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington on Sunday 3 November. It will feature a highly acclaimed production of Puccini’s opera as part of the cultural programme for the World Cup.

This production of La Bohème is by the London based company OperaUpClose, who beat off national competition to win a coveted Olivier Award for Best Opera Production for it in 2011.

One of the most accessible and moving operas ever written, La Bohème charts the ups and downs of a group of idealistic graduates as they bicker, party, try to make ends meet and follow their dreams.

Aspiring novelist Rodolfo discovers a harsher reality when he falls for immigrant cleaner Mimi, while his best friend Marcello’s tempestuous relationship with his on-off girlfriend Musetta brings humour and fireworks to the stage. The comic elements of this hugely popular production heighten its tragic ending with audiences saying this 21st century Bohème affected them like no other.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Growth, said: “It’s great for the Carnegie to be working with Rosehill again and we hope there will be many more partnerships like this which will attract increasingly diverse and bigger and better entertainment to this area. The Council was a key player in bringing the World Cup to Workington and this great cultural programme will ensure that even if people aren’t sports fans they can still be part of the action.”

Richard Elder, Director of Rosehill Theatre, said: “This will be our third event partnering with Allerdale Borough Council in producing high quality classical music in Workington in a really accessible way. Partnerships are central to the way forward for us all not least in promoting arts and entertainment and we are delighted that Allerdale Borough Council has made it possible for us to work closely with our colleagues at the Carnegie in presenting this great production of La Bohème.”

Steven Szostak, Chief Executive Officer, Britain’s Energy Coast, said “The opera coming to the Carnegie in association with Rosehill Theatre is a great example of why Britain’s Energy Coast helped bring the Rugby League World Cup to Workington, it is about both the economic and community benefits of the games, which we are already starting to see with the Welcoming the World programme of events, which the opera forms part.”

The performance is a new English version by Robin Norton-Hale who is also its Director. The Musical Director is Elspeth Wilkes and it is designed by Lucy Read with lighting designs by Richard Williamson. In reviews, the Sunday Times has said that OperaUpClose is ‘leading an artistic revolution’ and The Independent has said it is ‘fizzingly prolific’. The production has received multiple four star reviews from The Guardian, Times, Metro, Evening Standard and

Tickets priced at £15 (£7.50 if aged 26 or under) are on sale now. There is a pre-performance two course supper at 6pm at the Carnegie for the irresistible price of £7.50.
