Leisure centre in Workington shortlisted for prestigious awards

Monday 13 March 2017

Workington’s new leisure centre and swimming pool has been shortlisted for two Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards.

The building, which opened six months ago this week [17 March], has been nominated for the ‘Best Public Service Building’ and ‘Best Large Commercial Project’ categories in the Northern region.

The LABC awards recognise excellent buildings, outstanding companies, and partnerships and individuals that go that extra mile, taking into consideration elements such as high levels of compliance with building regulations, technical innovation, sustainability and high performance and outstanding craftsmanship.

Workington Leisure Centre is managed on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council under the Better brand, the customer facing brand of GLL, the UK's leading charitable leisure social enterprise.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that the leisure centre has received such fantastic recognition from the LABC. Our aim was to build a high quality, state-of-the-art facility that had the wow factor and we have worked hard to make this a reality. Its popularity is a testament to what an incredible project it has been and this nomination is the icing on the cake.”

Andy King, Regional Director for GLL, added: “This building is one of GLL’s flagship facilities, so we are thrilled that it has been shortlisted for two LABC awards. A lot of thought went into the building of the leisure centre, ensuring it was innovative and would meet customer expectations. It really is a beautiful facility so it’s great that it has been celebrated in this way.”

The leisure centre, which opened in September 2016, saw an increase of 70% in visitor numbers in its first two months of opening in comparison to the previous year.

The LABC awards ceremony will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead, Newcastle on Friday 7 April. All winning projects from the regional awards will automatically qualify for the LABC Grand Finals, taking place   at the Westminster Park Plaza, London on Friday 10 November.
