Last chance to nominate your favourite local sports personality

7 September 2016

Some of the best athletes in the world made their way through the county in the Tour of Britain this week, and there’s still time to nominate your local sporting hero for an Allerdale Sports Award.

The event, coordinated by Allerdale Borough Council, is back for a fifth year and recognises the achievements of local athletes and volunteers, with nominations closing at midnight on 19 September.

Visit the Active Cumbria website to submit your nomination. Forms can also be obtained by calling the sport, arts and leisure team at Allerdale Borough Council on 01900 702 711.

Olympic distance runner and world medal winner, Jenny Meadows, will be the special guest at the event, which will be held on 21 October 2016 at the Wave Centre in Maryport. The awards are also bigger than ever with a new junior and senior category for the Team of the Year.

Mark Fryer, Deputy Leader who has responsibility for sports development, said: “This is a really big year for sport in Allerdale and the Sports Awards are bigger and better than ever. There is a real buzz about sport in the area at the moment, with the Tour of Britain coming to the county, the Rio Olympics taking place this year and the new leisure centre in Workington due to open, so now is the time to honour all those who day in, day out, put in the time and effort to succeed. I would encourage everyone to get their nominations in now.”

The Alllerdale Sports Awards celebrate local sporting heroes and have proved a tremendous success, earning a place in the Allerdale sporting calendar among the area’s clubs and athletes.

The awards have grown over the years to become a great way to recognise and pay tribute to local athletes, as well as acknowledging the support of parents, local clubs and the community in general. They wouldn't be possible without the help of the many sponsors which include Active Cumbria, Wright Sports Services, Proactive Physical Health, Lakes College, Greenwich Leisure Limited, D A Harrison, New Balance, Trilakeland Club and John Hoban Transport.

The awards were inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and this year Allerdale has very much become the centre of local and national sporting initiatives. The Council will be opening the new sports centre and swimming pool in Workington, the Tour of Britain returned to the area, the New Zealand rugby team arrives in Workington for the Four Nations and Keswick saw the first Ironman distance triathlon.
