Date announced for opening of new leisure centre and swimming pool in Workington

Wednesday 14 September 2016

Allerdale’s new leisure centre and swimming pool will open to the public at 10am on Saturday 17 September 2016.

The state-of-the-art facility, at Brow Top in the town centre, is a bright, beautiful, modern space, packed with some of the best sports and leisure equipment available in the pools, the gym and the fitness suites.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “I am so proud that we can finally show the people of Allerdale and beyond the fantastic building that we’ve worked so hard to create.

We have said all along that we wanted to make sure the building was to the highest standard before opening. Following a slight delay to fix a small number of snagging and technical issues, I cannot wait to see the visitors enjoying the fantastic facilities on offer. I can confidently say that this is not a stereotypical Council leisure centre; it’s got the best equipment going. I have high hopes for the future of sport in West Cumbria - who knows, maybe we will see some future Olympic and Paralympic champions training in this excellent new facility.”

Over the opening weekend, GLL, who operate the centre on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council under the Better brand, will be offering taster sessions of sports and activities on a pay-per-visit basis. There will also be one-hour swimming sessions, plus the team from Better will be giving tours of the centre, and answering questions about the activities and clubs on offer.

Andy King, Regional Director for GLL, said: “We’re delighted to be operating this magnificent new centre in Workington on behalf of our partners Allerdale Borough Council. We’re looking forward to seeing the reaction of our existing customers when they use the facilities for the first time as they are truly first class. The new centre has so much to offer in a variety of different sports and activities and we look forward to welcoming many new users too over the coming weeks and months.”

This exciting new attraction will replace the two ageing buildings which house the town’s current swimming pool and sports centre at Moorclose. This centre will close to the public at 10pm on Wednesday 14 September to allow the staff to move the final pieces of equipment out of the building and into the new leisure centre before the opening on the Saturday morning. However, school swimming and swimming lessons will continue as usual on Thursday and Friday at Moorclose.

Please visit www.better.org.uk/venues/workington-leisure-centre for full details of the weekend’s activities. Normal fitness classes and swimming sessions will recommence on Monday 19 September in the new leisure centre. See the website for details.
