Record visitor numbers at new Workington Leisure Centre

Tuesday 13 December 2016

Visitor numbers are up 70% at Workington’s leisure centre.

There have been 46,062 visits to the new Brow Top facility since it opened two months ago, in comparison with 27,111 visits to the old leisure centre at Moorclose over the same period last year.

Those enjoying health and fitness sessions has also increased dramatically – almost doubling to 18,451 from 9,903 in 2015.

And the number of women using the centre has also gone up by an impressive 81%. In 2015, 9,274 women used the old centre over this time period – this has increased to 16,848.

Children’s activities are also proving very popular. An additional 60 youngsters have enrolled for Better Swim School classes, and an extra 50 children have signed up for gymnastic courses. The centre has also welcomed 400 new members since it opened in September, all keen to make the most of the swimming pool, gym, health and fitness classes and activities in the sports hall and on the outside pitches.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “We knew that when we built a swimming pool and leisure centre of this quality that people would come.

“The fact that we have seen visitor numbers increase so dramatically shows why we were exactly right to invest in this new centre, rather than trying, yet again, to revive the aged and deteriorating facilities at Moorclose. I am so pleased people are really enjoying using the pool, gym and fitness suites, and look forward to seeing the number of people using it grow and grow.”

Workington Leisure Centre is managed on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council under the Better brand, the customer facing brand of GLL, the UK's leading charitable leisure social enterprise.

Andy King, Regional Director for GLL, said: “We are really pleased with these visitor numbers – if this is what we can achieve in the first two months, there’s a brilliant future for this centre, which is one of the flagships of the GLL business.

“The praise we have received for the facilities in this bright modern building has been fantastic, and for the classes, sports and activities which are already on offer. As well as getting more people, more active more often we’re also working very hard to ensure we give people what they want and keep them coming back.”
