£2 million contract awarded to specialist Cumbrian firm

19 June 2015

A £2 million contract to design and install power, heating, lighting and ventilation technology at the new swimming pool and leisure centre in Workington has been awarded to a firm of Cumbrian specialists.

J&J Electrical (Cumbria) Ltd, which has offices in Workington and Carlisle, and its sister company, Cumbria Mechanical and Plumbing Ltd, will undertake the work on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council, which is building the new facility.

The company’s combined mechanical and electrical team will be responsible for the installation ofheating, ventilation, powerand lighting systems in the new centre.

Paul Shackley, Corporate Director at Allerdale Borough Council, said: “Robertson, our main contractor, follows strict procedures when appointing other companies to ensure they are the best people for the job so it is great when a local firm comes out on top of the bidding process. Our priority is ensuring that those who live and work in Allerdale are getting good value for money, and also that the work will be top quality – the added bonus is the company’s Cumbrian credentials.

“This is the second substantial contract for the leisure centre which has been awarded to a Cumbrian firm. Ashcroft Plant, of Maryport, has already been appointed as groundwork specialist in a contract worth £1.3 million. We have certain benchmarks for local spend - 30% of the build budget must be spent within a 10 mile radius, 50% within 20 miles and 75% within 40 miles – and the appointment of J&J Electrical, Cumbria Mechanical and Ashcroft is helping us ensure we meet those targets.”

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, added: “This just shows that any fears about money leaving the county during this building project were unfounded and that our local procurement strategy can work for the good of local people because we have great skills locally. Only the very specialist products needed for the leisure centre are being bought outside of West Cumbria.”

Established in 1993 by Graham and Alison Mossop, J&J Electrical carries out the design, installation and commissioning of electrical systems throughout Cumbria and South West Scotland, along with its sister company Cumbria Mechanical who specialise in commercial heating, pipefitting and plumbing services. The companies employ 80 staff, including 12 apprentices who will be working on the leisure centre in Workington, and there will also be work experience opportunities for students from Lakes College.

Graham said: “This is great news for our company, for our staff and suppliers, and for the Cumbrian economy. We’re committed to working with local firms and have developed our local supply chain over 22 years of steady trading. We hire trusted Cumbrian subcontractors when required and our aim is for them to live within 20 miles of the site, so that we keep the benefits to the economy as close to home as possible.

“There’s a wealth of expertise in West Cumbria, and the county as a whole, so we know we’re perfectly placed to bring this job in on time, and on budget. We better had – our staff and their families can’t wait to use it!”

This new swimming pool and leisure centre at Brow Top in Workington will replace two ageing buildings which house the town’s current sports centre at Moorclose. The new leisure centre will feature an eight-lane 25 meter swimming pool, and a separate learner pool, as well as a poolside health suite including sauna and steam room. There will also be a state-of-the-art fitness suite, four-court sports hall, two squash courts, two dance studios, a spinning studio and a climbing wall. Outside there will be all-weather five-a-side sports pitches and parking for 319 cars, with a wide public plaza in front of the building. The centre is due to open in Spring 2016.
