Love Your Local Market

25 May 2016

Loads of events are taking place in Allerdale to celebrate the annual Love Your Local Market campaign.

It’s a double celebration for Keswick this year as the town is celebrating the 740th anniversary of its Market Charter. To mark the occasion Geraud Markets Ltd, who operate markets on behalf of Allerdale Borough Council, have organised a Pirate Day on Saturday 28 May.

The event will see stall-holders and staff from local shops dressing up for the occasion, with members of the public also encouraged to don a pirate costume – or a princess outfit if they prefer. The event will include a special appearance from Captain Jack Sparrow, live music from an Elvis tribute act, free face-painting for children, street entertainment, a treasure hunt, free candy-floss and more.

Love Your Local Market (#LYLM2016) is a celebration of the UK market industry which takes place over a fortnight in late spring. It provides a national spotlight on the uniqueness of markets and traders across the country and the important role that they play in our towns. The events in Allerdale have received an additional boost thanks to funding from Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership which has given the council a share of a flood fund to help promote the local area.

Nik Hardy, Allerdale Borough Council’s head of economic growth, said: “It is going to be a fantastic day – the market traders and local businesses are really getting into the spirit of things. It’s been a difficult time for Keswick following the December floods and the subsequent closure of the A591, so this event is an opportunity to boost footfall in the town centre, promote Keswick as a shopping destination and to have some fun.”

Other Love Your Local Market events include:

  • Cockermouth Spring Fair, Bank Holiday Monday, 30 May – Fairground rides on Fairfield car park, a market on Wilko’s car park, live music, free face-painting and street entertainment.
  • Workington market, Wednesday 1 June – half term fun including live music, free face-painting and street entertainment.
  • New traders can get a ‘table for a tenner’ at Silloth, Workington and Wigton markets until 31 May 2016. It’s a great opportunity to test a new business idea or simply try running a market stall. Anyone interested should contact Phil Byers, Market Manager for Geraud Markets Ltd. on 07753934540 or e-mail Philip.Byers@groupegeraud.co.uk

The dates for the regular Allerdale Borough Council markets are:

  • Keswick Market Square – Thursday and Saturday
  • Silloth Green – Thursday
  • Workington Town Centre – Wednesday and Saturday
  • Wigton Market Hall – Friday
