Free stalls available at launch of market consultation

 12 June 2015

Market traders in Cockermouth are joining forces for a special event to coincide with the launch of a survey which will influence the future of markets across Allerdale borough.

On Friday 12 June, the team which organises Cockermouth Country Market in the United Reform Church on Main Street will be teaming up with a host of external market traders from 9am to 4pm for a bumper market day.

Free market stalls are available for local businesses and community organisations who want to join the event. Potential stallholders are urged to sign up quickly as spaces are limited – those already taking part will be selling baby clothes and knitted goods, olives, pet products and homewares, locally cooked and grown foods, locally-grown cut flowers, crafts and handmade jewellery.

Allerdale Borough Council’s Town Centre Manager for Cockermouth, Joe Broomfield, has brought the traders together. He will also be using the event to spread the word about the survey which aims to gather information about what the public want from their local markets. The consultation exercise includes questions about the frequency of the borough’s markets, preferred locations and what people would like to see on sale.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member, said: “We know that our markets are popular with residents and visitors alike and that they’re an important part of the shopping experience in our towns. That’s why we want to make sure we’re giving a good service and, having just entered into a new market contract with Geraud, who manage the markets on our behalf, it’s the perfect time to plan for the future.”

Cockermouth Country Market is part of a national organisation which promotes local produce and locally-crafted items. They host a market and a coffee shop at Cockermouth’s United Reform Church every Friday morning. In addition, Allerby Community Gardens, part of 'Grow West', is in the church's carpark on most Friday mornings, and will also be there on the June 12.

Businesses or community groups who would like a stall at the June 12 event in Cockermouth should contact Phil Byers, Market Manager for Geraud Markets Ltd, on 07753934540 before 5pm on Wednesday 10 June.

To take part in the market consultation, visit from Friday 12 June or call Joe Broomfield on 01900 702568 to request a hard copy of the survey.
