Construction businesses welcome at ‘meet the buyer’ event

9 April 2014

Construction specialists are being given the opportunity to pick up new business as part of an initiative to create a new leisure centre and swimming pool in Workington.

A ‘meet the buyer’ event takes place in the Council Chamber at Allerdale House, Workington, from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 22 April 2014. It will be run by Robertson, the lead contractor for the work. Anyone who is interested in tendering for the various aspects of the construction work is welcome to attend.

There will be a strong emphasis by Robertson on using local labour and suppliers to build the new leisure centre and swimming pool. The Council’s Executive has approved plans to complete the work under the Scape Framework. Scape is a local government-owned and controlled company which deals in construction projects and allows faster delivery of projects – often up to 18 months quicker than traditional development processes.

Scape sets out certain benchmarks regarding local spend - with 30% of the build budget being spent within a 10 mile radius, 50% within 20 miles and 75% within 40 miles. At the ‘meet the buyer’ event, local companies will have the opportunity to speak to Robertson’s representatives directly, find out what process they need to go through to tender for parts of the work, and pass on their contact details so they can become part of the process.

Additional organisations who will be attending the ‘meet the buyer’ event include:

  • Centric Global - providing business support for SMEs
  • Lakes College – providing information on a wide variety of training opportunities and further education courses available at Lakes College
  • CITB - providing information on construction-based training and grants.

A planning application for the new leisure centre and swimming pool is due to be submitted on Monday 14 April and, if planning approval is granted, work is due to begin on the new leisure centre later this year. It will be built on land at Brow Top, in the town centre. The facility will replace the two ageing buildings which house the town’s current swimming pool and sports centre at Moorclose. They date back to the 1970s and are inefficient both environmentally and in terms of operational costs, and the cost of extending their lifespan for just five additional years would be more than half the cost of building an entirely new centre.
