Raising the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day

Wednesday 24 August 2016

A flag raising ceremony will take place to mark Merchant Navy Day at Allerdale House in Workington on Friday 2 September.

The ceremony, which is being held by The Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Celia Tibble, will begin with a short procession starting from the top of the car park at Allerdale House down to the flag pole by the building, where the ceremony will take place.

The flag will be flown to mark the celebrations taking place nationwide in support of the men and women of the Merchant Navy community, which includes serving personnel and their families, veterans and the Cadet Forces.

The event will be attended by the Workington Sea Cadets and local veterans, and is open to members of the public. Those wishing to join the procession are asked to gather at the top of the car park by 10.05am in readiness for the ceremony. The group will then complete a short march to the flag pole at 10.15am and the Red Ensign will be raised by the Mayor at 10.30am.

Merchant Navy Day takes place nationally on Saturday 3 September. Hundreds of places across Britain will take part in the Seafarers UK ‘Fly the Red Ensign’ campaign, to honour those who kept our ‘island nation’ afloat during both World Wars, and celebrate the modern day Merchant Navy seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK’s imports, including half the food we eat.
